Southlands journalists take a look at the importance of financial education in this report for the BBC Schools News project.
Four years ago, Southlands High School students created the hugely popular Money Diaries which have received strong support from The Debt Advice Foundation. Since their launch, a programme was developed for the students to teach the crucial lessons in the book to primary school children in Chorley. The lessons place emphasis on financial mathematics and money management.
The Government has announced financial education will form a part of the compulsory national curriculum for all maintained schools in England. It’ll be a part of citizenship for 11-16 year olds and there’ll be stronger links to it in maths for all ages. Southlands are campaigning for the Money Diaries lesson that students have created for Chorley primary schools to be roll out nationwide as part of the new curriculum.
